A good way to stretch your creative writing muscles is to do a character interview (I also find them fun and interesting). I figured I’d start doing them here and if anyone wants to join me you can put your answer (or link to them) in the comments.
My main characters Kara and Oliver from my Teenaged Anti-Socialite series will be answering.
- What’s the cruellest thing they’ve ever done?
- What’s their favourite childhood memory?
- Do they drive? If so, do they own their own vehicle, and what is it?
- Do they have any bad habits?
- Do they have trust issues?
- Who are they closest with and how did they first meet?
- Are they more prone to flight or fight responses?
- Do they have any dark secrets?
- How do they spend their spare time?
- What’s their worst nightmare?
- What’s the cruellest thing they’ve ever done?
Kara: I’d say beat someone up, but that was always in defence… The worst thing I did was probably giving up on my relationship with Oliver when he had amnesia.
Oliver: That was pretty cruel of you. Mine isn’t too far off from yours actually; I pushed you away after my friend and ex kidnapped and sexually assaulted you… And there’s the time I got drunk and–
Kara: I’ve already forgiven you for both of those incidents.
Oliver: And I’ve been sufficiently slapped by Amy for things too.
2. What’s their favourite childhood memory?
Kara: I don’t really know. Maybe one of the times I was playing with Elijah and my stuffed animals.
Oliver: Elijah knows about your mountain of stuffed animals and your attachment to them?! I thought I was the only one…
Kara: Come on, don’t pout. I’ve known him longer than you and before the backstabbing best friend debacle. Now, what’s your favourite childhood memory?
Oliver: In elementary school, when you barrelled into a bully telling them not to pick on someone who can’t defend themselves.
Kara: *Looks away blushing* I barely remember doing it.
- 3. Do they drive? If so, do they own their own vehicle, and what is it?
Kara: Nope, even the thought of driving gives me anxiety.
Oliver: Yup, my dad gave me a dark red Dodge Challenger
4. Do they have any bad habits?
Kara: Probably a bunch… I’m a super picky eater, so I don’t necessarily eat the healthiest. I tend to push people away, even to the point of running away from them.
Oliver: I can vouch for that. Personally, I have a habit of getting jealous and possessive.
Kara: And I can vouch for that.
Oliver: I’m working on it…
5. Do they have trust issues?
Kara: Yes, and they’re deep-seated. Oliver’s helped me trust people more, but honestly, it’s still hard to trust people.
Oliver: Recent events have made me trust myself less; I never thought I was capable of–
Kara: I’ve already forgiven you, so let’s move on.
Oliver: But… Fine.
6. Who are they closest with and how did they first meet?
Kara: I guess now that’s Oliver and we met sometime in elementary school. Otherwise, it’s Elijah and Amy, another friend from elementary school and Oliver’s cousin.
Oliver: Kara, obviously; she’s my girlfriend. Her taking down the bully wasn’t our first meeting. I think I first saw her in the first grade during recess, playing with Elijah and some other girl. I wanted to join in on their fun on more than one occasion, but I was super shy back then and had trouble approaching anyone. Besides, I wasn’t lucky enough to be in the same class as her for a long time, so I didn’t have too many opportunities.
7. Are they more prone to flight or fight responses?
Kara: I’m pretty split on that. In a real fight, I’m not good at backing down and I’ll choose to fight. When it’s something… emotional, I tend to take flight and run away.
Oliver: She’s run away from me so many times it’s starting to hurt my feelings. I rarely run away, so I’d say I’m prone to a fight response.
8. Do they have any dark secrets?
Kara: I think he knows them all… which are mostly emotional trauma and of the sort.
Oliver: *Smiles* I know Kara quite well. I don’t know if I have any dark secrets per se, but I do have a bit of a… colourful past in regards to women.
Kara: I don’t know if that’s considered a secret. Most people know you made your way around for a little while…
Kara: Whatever, it’s in the past.
9. How do they spend their spare time?
Kara: Playing video games, drawing, reading, and whatever Oliver drags me out to do.
Oliver: Exercising, playing guitar and piano, studying, driving, sports. Do I have to count everything my parents forced me to take lessons in? ‘Cause then I’d have to include ballroom dancing and a bunch of other things. Other than that, my spare time goes to Kara; I hang out with her as much as I’m allowed.
10. What’s their worst nightmare?
Kara: My family and friends being taken away from me in some cruel way… Can I skip thinking about this anymore?
Oliver: Losing Kara in any way or form, which includes me doing something stupid and being broken up with.
